Archbishop of Canterbury issues statement on Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

[Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury] Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby on Aug. 2 issued a statement saying a July 19 International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion “makes definitively clear that Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is unlawful and needs to end as rapidly as possible.”

He also said that the State of Israel has been “denying the Palestinian people dignity, freedom and hope,” and that ending its occupation of Palestinian territory is “a legal and moral necessity.”

“Having visited our Palestinian Christian brothers and sisters many times over recent decades,” Welby said, “it is clear to me that the regime imposed by successive Israeli governments in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is one of systemic discrimination.”
