Council welcomes Nobel Peace Prize award to nuclear bomb survivors
[World Council of Churches] The World Council of Churches welcomed the news that the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, the Japanese organization of survivors of the nuclear bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
The organization was given this award for their work to call for a world without nuclear weapons, which they have done by giving their own testimonies and striving to make known the realities of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons.
The World Council of Churches and its member churches have spoken out against nuclear weapons since its founding assembly in 1948.
