Australian clergy describe ways churches can combat elder abuse

[Melbourne Anglican] Advocates fighting against elder abuse believe church communities could offer friendship, safety and support for vulnerable people.

Aged care chaplain the Rev. Kirsty Brown said that one of the biggest challenges for people experiencing elder abuse was feeling that they didn’t have anyone they can talk to, but she added that the elderly who were part of church communities were well-placed when church worked as it should.

She said that she had experienced in many different congregations a sense that the people were looking out for their elderly members.

Elder advocate the Rev. Ben Boland said that Christians are called to love their neighbors and that could be as simple as knowing someone’s name.
