Diocese of Kansas announces slate for 11th bishop
[Diocese of Kansas] The Council of Trustees, acting as the canonical Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, on July 9 released a slate of four candidates for the diocese’s 11th bishop.
The candidates are:
- The Rev. Grant Ambrose, rector, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in York, Pennsylvania, Diocese of the Susquehanna.
- The Rev. David Gortner, rector, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Diocese of Spokane.
- The Rev. Whitney Rice, canon to the ordinary, Diocese of Missouri.
- The Rev. Lisa Senuta, canon for spiritual life and clergy care, Diocese of Kansas.
Nominees may be added by a petition process July 9-18. Petition forms can be accessed on the diocesan website.
Lay members and clergy of the Topeka-based diocese will have opportunities to meet the candidates in person through a series of meet and greets held in all four convocations. These gatherings will be held Sept. 15-18. Full details will be announced soon.
The election will take place Oct. 24 during the Diocese of Kansas’s convention at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka. The ordination and consecration is scheduled for April 17, 2027, at Grace Cathedral, with Presiding Bishop Sean Row officiating.

The diocese’s former bishop, the Rt. Rev. Cathleen Bascom, resigned on Jan. 31 to serve as a consultant to The Episcopal Church to help create eco-region networks in the U.S. and Province IX.
