[Anglican Taonga] New Zealand Anglican Archbishop Don Tamihere and other Anglican leaders joined with Māori church leaders to offer prayers, readings and blessings as Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po was raised up as the new Māori queen in a Sept. 5 ceremony.
After she was crowned by having a Bible held over her, Tamihere anointed her with sacred oils. Tamihere also preached, saying of the 27-year-old queen, “She is humble and wise beyond her years. She has her people and all of her ancestors behind her. May God bless her reign as she seeks to lead her people to Kotahitanga (unity).” he said.
In addition to Anglican leaders, members of Methodist, Presbyterian and Ratana churches and the Salvation Army also were invited to take part.
