Panama bishop leads COP29 side event on non-economic impacts of climate change
[World Council of Churches] The Rt. Rev. Julio Murray, bishop of the Anglican Church in Panama, was one of several faith leaders who led a side event at COP29 that addressed the non-economic impacts of climate change.
The event, “Exploring Non-Economic Impacts of Climate Change: Faith-Based Insights on Loss and Damage,” was one of two sponsored by the World Council of Churches during COP29, the United Nations climate change conference taking place in Azerbaijan.
Murray underscored the role of faith communities in supporting affected populations. “Faith organizations witness and address the losses that others overlook — loss of identity, hope and connection. These impacts require a response that prioritizes human dignity and community resilience.”
The other event, “Beyond Material Loss: Exploring Non-Economic Impacts of Climate Change Through Faith-Based Perspectives,” highlighted the need to incorporate non-economic losses, including cultural and spiritual dimensions, into global climate assessments.
