St. Paul’s Cathedral in Victoria, Australia, to be site of prayer vigil for refugees

[The Melbourne Anglican] Christians will be asked to pray for an end to cruelty to refugees, including those left in Papua New Guinea and Nauru, at an Aug. 16 vigil on the steps of Victoria’s St. Paul’s Cathedral.

More than 100 asylum seekers remain in Papua New Guinea and Nauru more than a decade after the federal government made offshore processing agreements with the two countries. Refugee advocates including the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre reported that cruel treatment, including inadequate health provision and medical neglect, placed refugee lives at risk under the policy.

The ecumenical group Love Makes A Way is staging the vigil to pray for an end to the asylum seekers and refugees’ offshore plight.
